EU deploys Election Observation Mission to Nepal
KATHMANDU: The European Union, on invitation of Government of Nepal, has deployed an Election Observation Mission to Nepal to observe the House of Representatives and Provincial Assemblies elections scheduled for November 36 and December 7.
Issuing a press statement today, EU said it had deployed EOM to Nepal both in 2008 and 2013, reflecting it’s long-term commitment to supporting credible, transparent and inclusive elections in the nation.
Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Police and Vice-President of the European Commission, has appointed Ms Zelijana Zovko, Member of the European Parliament, as Chief Observer, it said in the statement.
“Earlier this year, we witnessed the first local elections in Nepal in 20 years. The upcoming elections for the House of Representatives and provincial assemblies will be another important moment for the country and crucial for completing the constitutional transition process. Through our EOM, under the leadership of Chief Observer Ms Zelijana Zovko, the EU will provide an important contribution to this electoral process,” High Representative/Vice-President Mogherini said.
“It is a great honour for me to lead the EU Election Observation Mission to Nepal. The forthcoming elections are taking place under a new political and electoral system. I’m very committed to accompany Nepal in this important phase of its democratic process,” Chief Observer, Ms Zeljana Zovko shared in the statement.
The diplomatic mission said it’s looking forward to cooperating with other international and domestic observation missions during the elections.
The House of Representatives and Provincial Assemblies elections are scheduled for November 26 and December 7.
As per the constitutional requirement, all the elections should be held by January 21 for the implementation of Constitution and Federalism in the nation.
