Delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee visited India

New Delhi, 24 February 2017 – I visited India from 22 to 23 February 2017 as a member of the delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament.

The main goal of the visit was to promote a more dynamic Parliamentary dimension in deepening the EU-Indian strategic partnership, following the EU-India summit, held on 30 March 2016.

The delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee was headed by the Committee President David McAllister (EPP, Germany). Other members of the delegation were Cristian Dan Preda (EPP, Romania), Neena Gill (S&D, UK), Jo Leinen (S&D, Germany) and Urmas Paet (ALDE, Estonia).

During the visit we met Shashi Tharoor, the President of the Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs, Ajit Doval, national security advisor, Arvind Panagariya, the Vice-president of the National Institution for Transforming India and other senior officials from the Government and the Parliament, representatives of the diplomatic corps and the civil society.

Various topical issues were on the agenda of the meetings, such as EU-India relations, enhancement of the foreign policy dialogue about the globally and regionally significant issues – multilateral cooperation, regional security, fight against terrorism, proliferation of weapons for mass destruction, cyber security, fight against cyber piracy and EU support in development policy and promotion of human rights.

We came to a common conclusion that cooperation between the European Parliament and the Indian Parliament should be further developed, especially through similar visits and inter-parliamentary dialogue.

Conclusions and observations from the visit to India shall be included into the Report on Political Relations of the European Union and India, which is now being drafted by the rapporteur of the Committee, Cristian Dan Preda.
