Zovko at the 25th meeting of the EU-Chile Joint Parliamentary Committee

Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko attended the 25th meeting of the EU-Chile Joint Parliamentary Committee held on 22 and 23 January in the Chile capital Santiago de Chile.

Besides MEP Zovko, who is also a shadow rapporteur of the EPP for Chile, other members of the delegation were: Constanze Krehl (S&D, Germany), Renata Weber (ALDE, Romania), Agustín Diaz de Mera (EPP, Spain), Julia Pitera (EPP, Poland), Gabriel Mato (EPP, Spain), Carlos Iturgaiz (EPP, Spain) and Joëlle Bergeron (EFDD, France).

The 25th meeting of the EU-Chile Joint Parliamentary Committee was chaired by the MEP Constanza Krehl and the Chile senator Isabel Allende. The main topics of discussion were: political and economic situation in the European Union and Chile, the process of updating the Association Agreement between the EU and Chile, the current situation and future cooperation in energy field between the EU and Chile.

Members of the EP delegation held meetings with the President of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet and with the representatives of the business sector, trade unions and civil society. They also exchanged ideas with the head of the EU Delegation to Chile, the Ambassador Stella Zervoudaki and with other EU ambassadors, including the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Chile, Nives Malenica, senator Hernan Larraín, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Deputy of the Chile Foreign Affairs Secretary, Edgard Riveroso.

Formal negotiations on modernisation of the Association Agreement between the EU and Chile were opened in November last year. The EU Council decided yesterday, 22 January, to announce the mandate for modernisation of the Association Agreement between the EU and Chile, having thus responded to requirements for higher transparency and better information on the negotiations.

Political and economic relations between the EU and Chile have so far been managed on the basis of the Association Agreement, signed in 2002 and fully implemented in 2005. The goal of the Association Agreement modernisation is to reinforce the actual cooperation between the EU and Chile in political, security and trade issues in order to further deepen the relations.

Before the meeting of the EU-Chile Joint Parliamentary Committee, MEP Zovko met with the representatives of the Croatian community in Chile.
