Zovko: You cannot kill Christmas!

Strasbourg, 15 December 2021

Vice President of the EPP Group Željana Zovko reacts on recent events in Sarajevo where Christians were threatened for celebrating Christmas. She stated “you cannot kill Christmas, you cannot kill the people.” She called for the attention to those Croats, Christians and European citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina that these days still fear to openly celebrate Christmas.

The European Parliament has held today also a debated on the Commission working document on inclusive language. The paper included proposals on refraining from sharing Christmas wishes in people to people communication.

Zovko commented that the motto of the European Union is “United in diversity”. She underlined that this entails respect for each other’s cultures, beliefs and traditions. “For many European citizens, Christmas is a traditional and the most important religious holiday that they wish to celebrate with their families and dear ones. Just as we respect the traditions of other religious and belief communities, we should be able to openly share the joyful spirit and deep symbolism that come with Christmas celebrations,” Zovko stated.

She said that the proposal to avoid using references to Christmas in people to people communication as was mentioned in the Commission working document, that has been withdrawn in the meantime, stands opposite to these very same values.
