Zovko: the new strategy for SMEs should focus on digitalisation, innovation and education

Brussels 17 December 2020,

The European Parliament adopted the report on a new strategy for European small and medium enterprises (SMEs). According to the members, such a strategy must pursue the primary objective of regaining competitiveness, both within the internal market and in trade relations with third countries.

Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko was responsible as EPP shadow rapporteur for the opinion in the Committee of Culture and Education. She said that the cultural sector is known for its high number of SMEs. Thanks to her amendments, the report acknowledges the pandemic has shown the importance of the cultural and creative sector for our economy and social life. “We have also seen that the demand for digital cultural content has significantly increased. Assisting our businesses with their digitalisation, could stimulate many of them towards a more competitive future.” Zovko said.

The report also encourages to improve the integration of entrepreneurial skills in the different stages of education, calls to decrease the administrative burden should be reduced and underlines the need for more investments in research and innovation.
