Zovko in official visit to Tailand

Bruxelles, 15 May 2018 – MEP Željana Zovko visited Thailand from 10 to 11 May as a member of the AFET delegation. The main purpose of the visit was to restore bilateral cooperation between the European Union and Thailand, which had been at a standstill since a coup d’état was performed in the country four years before and to encourage the country to organise the democratic elections within shortest time possible.

Other members of the AFET delegation were: David McAllister, AFET Chairman (EPP, Germany), Cristian Dan Preda (EPP, Rumania), Doru Frunzulica (S&D, Rumania), Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar (S&D, Spain), Wajid Khan (S&D, United Kingdom) and Urmas Paet (ALDE, Estonia).

AFET delegation met government officials, deputies of the Parliament and representatives of the civil society. They discussed various topics such as further enhancement of regional cooperation between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN), which Thailand will chair from 2019, revitalisation of the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Thailand, anti-terrorism fight, cyber security, migrations, promotion of fundamental human rights and freedom of media.
