Zovko: The only durable solution for the migration crisis is to be found at the very source

Strasbourg, 4 April 2017 – The motion for the European Parliament Resolution on Addressing the Refugee and Migrant Movements: the Role of EU External Action was on the agenda of today’s plenary session in Strasbourg.

It was stated in the discussion that a comprehensive and principled EU action was required to respond to challenges of the migration and refugees crisis.

The Member of the European Parliament, Željana Zovko, pointed out to three key messages which this Report should convey to the citizens and global partners.

As of Zovko, the only durable solution for the migration crisis is to be found at the very source. The foreign policy of the European Union must take a more assertive role in the reconciliation process in order to prevent new waves of refugees. The EU is expected to lead the coordination of funds for migration management financing together with other international institutions. Furthermore, the EU should more clearly communicate the efforts it has been putting in eradication of poverty and intolerance, which are considered to be the main cause of injustice, forcing people to flee their homes.

“We must not forget the countries with sensitive inter-confessional population structure, such as Lebanon, the country which suffers under a huge burden of refugees, who make even one half of the country’s population. They urgently need help, so that the dam does not collapse forcing Europe to face a bigger problem.“ – added Zovko as a conclusion to her speech.

Voting on the Resolution of the European Parliament on Addressing the Refugee and Migrant Movements: the Role of EU External Action is scheduled for tomorrow, 12 o’clock.
