Zovko: EU must become a global leader in exporting of ideas, know-how and technologies to third countries in order to help them reduce emission of greenhouse gas

Brussels, 25 April 2017Amendments filed by MEP Željana Zovko were adopted at today’s session of the Development Committee of the European Parliament within the Committee Opinion on the LULUCF Regulation Proposal (Regulation on the Inclusion of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry into the 2030 Climate and Energy Framework).

As a shadow rapporteur, Zovko participated on behalf of the EPP in drafting of the Opinion of the Development Committee on the LULUCF Regulation Proposal, the main purpose of which is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from land use, land use change and forestry in context of international obligations from the Paris Agreement.

In context of development policy, amendments filed by MEP Zovko stressed a necessity of aligning the LULUCF sector with the Policy Coherence for Development in order to make synergy effects with a positive impact on domestic policies of developing countries.

“In context of development policy, the Regulation Proposal is duly aligned with the Programme of Sustainable Development until 2030, particularly with its goal no. 13 – reduction of emission and building resilience to effects of climate changes. However, I firmly believe that the EU must become a global leader in exporting of ideas, know-how and technologies related to LULUCF sector to third countries in order to help them reduce emission of greenhouse gas and secure sustainable food production. Besides, small- and medium-sized enterprises must be involved and additionally encouraged in those countries in order to achieve this goal.” – as of Zovko.
