Strasbourg, 13 June 2017 – At its today’s plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted the Report on the Proposal for a Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council Amending the Decision from 2014 Establishing a Union Action for the European Capitals of Culture for the Years 2022 to 2033 to include Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. In addition, the integral list of the European Capitals of Culture for the Years 2022 to 2033 was adopted.
The main goal of the Decision Establishing a Union action for the European Capitals of Culture for the Years 2022 to 2033 is to safeguard and promote diversity of cultures in Europe and to highlight the common features they share, as well as to increase citizens’ sense of belonging to a common cultural area and to foster the contribution of culture to the long-term development of cities in accordance with their respective strategies and priorities.
Last year Rijeka was appointed the European Capital of Culture for the year 2020.
MEP Željana Zovko said on the occasion:
“It makes me extremely happy that Croatia and its city of Rijeka will hold the title of the European Capital of Culture in the year 2020. That will be a marvellous opportunity for Croatia to show to Europe and to the entire world its cultural wealth and diversity and the shared history and values and I am absolutely certain that Rijeka and the entire country will be very much up to the task and will know how to grasp the opportunity to strengthen its cultural, social and economic advantages and improve its image and visibility among its own citizens, but also globally.“
