Tallinn, 8 September 2017 – Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko has participated today in the exchange of opinions with Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, held within the Interparliamentary Conference on Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy (CFSP/CSDP).

Zovko said that the European Parliament recognized the importance of domestic and international security, which have a direct impact on security of all European citizens. She added that the EU Global Strategy reflected many activities and priorities of the EU foreign and security policy, which may strengthen stability and peace outside the EU borders.

Zovko posed a question to Mogherini whether the increase of the budgetary item purposed for the mentioned priorities would be taken in consideration in order to keep pace with the global challenges the EU was facing.

Zovko also mentioned that the support of the European Union, both in administrative and financial terms, was needed for the implementation of reforms in the Western Balkans countries. She asked whether the Commission was going to change its position about reducing the budgetary funds for the IPA instrument.

“Slowing down the pace of implementation of institutional and political reforms in the Western Balkans countries may have an adverse impact on stability and security not only within those countries but also on the EU borders.“ – added Zovko at the end of her address.
