Bruxelles, 17 October 2017 – On occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko has received today in her office the young ambassadors from the international organisation “The One Campaign“.
The young ambassadors presented their organisation and its uttermost goal to eradicate poverty in underdeveloped countries, what is also one of the UN global goals of sustainable development.
They discussed the problems faced by the young people in developing countries, especially when it comes to education. The young ambassadors further presented the Youth Plug-In initiative which was gathering African and European organisations of young people in preparation for the Africa-Europe summit of young people scheduled for 2 – 4 October 2017 in Abidjan.
The young people will have an opportunity in three cities, Abidjan, Bruxelles and Addis Abeba, to discuss the common problems and challenges, such as poverty and limited access to resources, education, health, employment, social discrimination, lack of involvement in decision-making, peace-building and conflict-resolving.
The young ambassadors asked MEP Zovko to support the idea of allocating more funds in the EU budget 2018 to education, health and youth employment programmes.
Zovko expressed her willingness to support the young ambassadors and pointed out that the European Union was the major donor in the developing countries. She mentioned her visit to Abidjan, before the Africa-EU Summit. She stressed that the young people in Africa wanted to have equal chances and the only way to get them was by investing in education system, life-long learning, professional training and development of skills and innovations in order to prepare for the competitive requirements of the labour market.
