Strasbourg, 23 October 2018
Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko participated yesterday in the plenary session in Strasbourg, where she expressed her concern about the outcome of the elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the possible aftermath based on early reactions of some elected officials from Sarajevo.
Zovko pointed out that as an EU member state and a guarantor of the Dayton Paris Accords, Croatia will remain vigilant on how these developments will affect its peace and stability.
‘Encouraged by the statement of Ms. Mogherini and Mr. Hahn on the importance of constituting of the House of Peoples consistent with the BiH Constitutional Court decision in the case of Ljubić, I think it is now high time to adopt the Election Law in order to avoid further deepening of the crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Any further advocation of the actors giving support to two extremes, centralization and segregation, polarise the country’. – said Zovko.
Zovko appealed to revisiting of the status of the third constituent community, which has historically taken the middle road between the two extremes, and has led the country’s EU and NATO integration efforts.
‘One community is disenfranchised due to a series of the Election Law changes over the past two decades. BiH can overcome the present troubles only if all three constituent communities can come together and ensure that each of them has an equal stake in their country’. -said Zovko.
