Brussels, 29 November 2018
The European Parliament will vote today on its plenary meeting in Brussels on the Resolution on the Commission Report on Serbia 2018.
The Draft Report on Serbia welcomes the progress made in meeting the criteria for EU membership and a continuous promotion of the idea on EU membersip as Serbia’s strategic goal.
“I welcome the efforts Serbia has put in aligning its visa regime with the EU visa regime since the adoption of the amendments at the AFET, on which I was actively working. They have recently cancelled the non-visa regime with Iran and that will certainly help the fight against illicit migration to the member-countries.” said Zovko.
Following the EU Enlargement Strategy to the Western Balkans, released by the Commission in February 2018, Zovko pointed out that good neighbouring relations must be promoted.
“We must not foget to duly inform the public in all member-countries on the enlargement process, considering that the final decision on ratification of the association agreement of a new member is up to its national parliament. Therefore, I expect the public discourse in Serbia to be changed in sense to be more coherent with Serbia’s aspirations to become a full member of the EU.” – added Zovko.
