An agreement has been reached today in the European Parliament in Strasbourg during the inter-institutional negotiations on the Proposal of the European Parliament and European Council Decision on Changes and Amendments to the Decision 1313/2013 on the Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
The new advanced Union Civil Protection Mechanism and the rescEU instrument have a goal to establish the EU own capacities for fight against natural disasters and disasters caused by human factor, to be used in cases when the member-states may not provide help. The funds in amount of EUR 205 million will be available for the new mechanism in the period from 2019 to 2020.
MEP Zovko participated as the rapporteur on behalf of the Development Committee in creation of the Opinion on the Union Civil Protection Mechanism. In July 2018, she organised the Conference “Union Civil Protection Mechanism – Protection at the Service of the Citizens” in Split. The European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides participated in the Conference, as well as the Croatian Minister of Internal Affairs Davor Božinović and other relevant stakeholders from the civil protection field in the Republic of Croatia.
“I welcome the agreement on the new advanced Union Civil Protection Mechanism reached between the Parliament, Commission and Council. I sincerely hope that the new Mechanism and the rescEU instrument will help the member-states in efficient fight against disasters, which we witnessed in last two fire seasons.“ said Zovko.
