Strasbourg, 17 January 2019 – Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko has participated today in the debate on Azerbaijan, the Mehman Huseynov case, held in Strasbourg.
In today s plenary session, Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko, EPP negotiator for the Resolution on Azerbaijan, stressed that it was very important to adopt the new partnership agreement between the European Union and Azerbaijan, but that it was equally important that the new agreement is based on the respect of the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms in order to enhance the bilateral relations between the two countries.
“All political groups have united around this Resolution which calls for the immediate release of Mr Huseynov and to provide him with professional medical attention, pointing out to significance of democratisation of the society and protection of human rights.” said Zovko.
Furthermore, MEP Zovko stressed that the goal was to convey a message that the it was not the Union s intention to break the relation and cooperation with Azerbaijan, but to support Azerbaijan in finding the solutions and models for transformation of the country into a democratic and tolerant society.
“Freedom of speech as one of basic human rights must not be used selectively. The rights of the weakest must not be traded with. We must fight for them. That is what I will be doing as long as I am a member of the European Parliament, but also after that.” – said Zovko.
