Brussels, 11 February 2019
On 11 February, Europe celebrates the European 112 Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the European emergency number 112.
Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko participated as a rapporteur from the Committee on Development in creation of the opinion on the Union Civil Protection Mechanism. She also organised a conference in Split on this topic. The new advanced Union Civil Protection Mechanism and the rescEU instrument aim at establishing the EU own capacities for tackling natural disasters and disasters caused by humans, to be used when the member-states are not capable of providing help.
The common Europe-wide emergency number 112 for police, emergency medicine and other rescue services was introduced after the adoption of the Declaration on Marking the European 112 Day. The Declaration was adopted with the largest majority ever to have been attained for a written declaration (530 MEPs out of a total of 785).
