Zovko as key speaker in Zagreb at the Interparliamentary Conference for Common Foreign, Security and Defence policy

On 2-4 March, Croatia will host the Interparliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CFSP/CSDP) in Zagreb in the context of the parliamentary dimension of the Croatian presidency of the Council. As Member of the European Parliament and EPP vice-coordinator in the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Željana Zovko will be a key speaker in the debate on Tuesday on credible European perspective for the Western Balkans.

Within her parliamentary activities, Zovko actively contributes to the  Parliament’s relations with the region and is a member of the Parliamentary working group on the Western Balkans and part of the delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. In addition, as co-rapporteur of the new Instrument of Pre-accession Assistance (IPA III), Zovko is also negotiating the upcoming legislation covering financial support to the Western Balkans to work towards  European integration.

in her presentation, Zovko will reflect on the latest developments regarding the European enlargement process, such as the Council’s non-decision in October and the Commission’s new methodology. She will also look forward to the next Council meeting in March and the Western Balkan Summit in Zagreb in May. Based on her recent official visit to Turkey and the latest developments in the Middle East, Zovko will also cover the migratory situation and its effects for the EU and the Western Balkans.

The IPC on CFSP/CSDP is composed of delegations of the national Parliaments of the EU member states and the European Parliament. National Parliaments of EU candidate countries and European member countries of NATO can also be represented by observers. The Conference provides a framework for the exchange of information and best practices in the area of CFSP and CSDP, in order to enable EU national Parliaments and the European Parliament to be fully informed when carrying out their respective roles in this policy area.
