Zovko: the comprehensive agreement of the EU and the UK should include a shared framework on foreign and security policy

Brussel, 12 June 2020

The Committee of Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, together with the Committee of International Trade will vote on Friday on the Recommendations on the negotiations for a new partnership with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In the report, the Parliament shows its support for the work of the EU negotiators with the team of the UK.

EPP vice-coordinator for Foreign Affairs, Željana Zovko states that this report is of great importance and provides a clear overview of the EU’s position. “The close involvement of different associated committees and the input from the different political groups strengthen the political value of this document.”

Both the EU and the UK expressed their desire to build a close partnership. However, the UK refuses to discuss a future cooperation in the field of foreign and security policy. “Given the common history, mutual interests and amplified by their geographic proximity, these matters should also be included in the negotiation package”, said Zovko. In her amendments, Zovko proposed to stress that it is in both sides’ interest to adopt a common framework on foreign and security policy and to provide a shared approach towards current and future common challenges.

After the adoption of the recommendations in the joint session of the Committee of Foreign Affairs and the Committee of International Trade, the text will be scheduled for a final vote in the plenary session of 17-19 June.
