Zovko as keynote speaker in international conference on lung cancer screening

Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko participated as keynote speaker in the international conference “Lung Cancer Screening: Driving implementation across Europe”. The event was organised by COCIR, in cooperation with the European Society for Radiology and Lung Cancer Europe. Zovko was invited in her capacity as the Co-Chair of the MEP Lung Health Group in the European Parliament. 

Zovko welcomed the achievement of Croatia to be the first Member State of the EU to develop a national screening strategy for lung cancer. during her speech, Zovko elaborated on her activities related to lung health and informed the audience about the objectives of the MEP Lung Health Group. She explained that this initiative allows members of the European Parliament to create a platform to explore the legislative and non-legislative measures that can be taken at the European level. Within this group, members enter into dialogue with experts, we promote a bigger understanding for respiratory diseases, Zovko said. 

Zovko also stressed that the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for the EU to have a stronger role in the area of health. “While the biggest share of our attention goes nowadays to the current surge in covid-19 cases, also non-covid related health problems need improved awareness, better monitoring and actions to enhance the prevention,” she said. The EU4Health initiative and the Beating Cancer Plan are for Zovko a sign that the EU will make the fight against cancer a top priority.
