Strasbourg, 19 October 2022
The heads of states and governments of the European Union will convene on 20 and 21 October for the meeting of the European Council. They will discuss the proposal of the Commission to reduce the skyrocketing prices of energy across the EU, the latest developments in Ukraine and other external policy issues.
Ahead of the Council meeting, Vice Chair of the Committee of Foreign Affairs Željana Zovko addressed the European Parliament during the plenary session with a call for more European action in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Zovko praised the work of Council President Michel in the negotiation between Armenia and Azerbaijan and said that similar actions of preventive diplomacy were needed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“Actions such as high-level mediation are needed to stabilise the situation and conclude the final agreement on the necessary electoral reform.” Zovko said. She referred to the recent Commission recommendation that labelled the electoral reform as the utmost priority for the country and added that this it is also a high priority for European Member State Croatia and for European peace and security in general.
Zovko said that it is needed to find a just solution for the electoral law that will take into account all three communities and other citizens of a country that went through terrible war and is still living the consequences of this tragedy. “We should not let our transatlantic partners do our job. Let’s take on the responsibilities and do not leave this country up to an experiment and to a cold winter for all those who are left beyond the borders of the European Union.” Zovko concluded.
