Vice Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the European Parlia
ment Željana Zovko participated in the delegation to Mexico City and Quintana Roo for the 28th meeting of the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). During the mission, the MEPs met EU ambassadors, civil society and Mexican authorities and parliamentarians to discuss bilateral relations.
As first physical meeting of the JPC after the pandemic, the delegation comes at a timely moment when the EU and Mexico are about to finalise the modernised EU-Mexico Global Agreement. The delegates evaluated the state of play and of this agreement and discussed the efforts needed conclude the agreement and sub
mit for ratification by the Mexican Congress and the European Parliament.
Furthermore, the different meetings focussed on the political, economic and social situation in Mexico and in the EU, cooperation on migration, gender equality and tackling violence against women and bilateral cooperation on security and justice. In addition, the delegates also discussed cooperation and dialogue between the EU and Mexico on multilateral issues such as the EU and Mexican position on the war in Ukraine the implementation of Agenda 2030 for sustainable development.
The delegation also visited an EU-funded project that works on promoting integration of people of the move in Mexico through decent jobs. In cooperation with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organisation for Migration, the EU supports Mexico in institutionalizing a job matching system for people on the move by financial inclusion and access to social services.
