Standing rapporteur for Azerbaijan Željana Zovko on AFET mission to the South Caucasus

Baku, 19 July 2022

From 19 to 22 July, a delegation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs will visit Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia during their mission to the South Caucasus. Among the participants is also Željana Zovko, standing rapporteur on Azerbaijan.

In Baku, the delegation will meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the Minister of Energy, Parviz Shahbazov. In addition, they will visit the Port of Alat.

In Georgia meetings are scheduled with the President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili. It will be the first European delegation to Georgia since the Council has opened a European perspective for the country at its latest Summit in June.

The mission will conclude in Armenia, where the members will meet with Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia and Ararat Mirzoyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The mission comes at a time of high sensitivity due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In addition, Zovko will also follow up on the security situation after the violent conflict in the South Caucasus in 2020 and the relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
