Zovko appointed as Chief Observer of the EU election observation mission in Honduras

Brussels, 23 September 2021

Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko has been appointed by High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell as the Chief observer in the European Election Observation Mission to Honduras. The delegation will monitor the upcoming general elections that will take place on 28 November.

Zovko: “I am extremely honoured to have been appointed to lead the EU Election observation mission to Honduras. This mission is a confirmation of the importance of democratic values in our relations with our partner state. I look forward to engaging with the Honduran authorities, political parties and stakeholders. The EU mission will monitor the election process in an independent and objective way.”

As with previous election observations in Honduras by a European delegation in 2013 and 2017, the upcoming missions will be deployed based on the invitation of the Honduran authorities. A core team will travel already mid-October and follow the preparations towards Election Day. As Chief Observer, Zovko will join the team in Honduras at the end of October and during the weekend of the elections. After the announcement of the election results, Zovko will present a final report on behalf of the observation mission regarding their findings and recommendations about the election process.
