Zovko visiting the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation
Brussels/Venice, 22 September 2018 – MEP Željana Zovko participates this week in the work visit to the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC) in Venice with the delegation of the Human Rights Sub-committee (DROI) of the European Parliament.
The main purpose of the visit is to continue and enhance cooperation and partnership between the EIUC as the leading research human rights network, Global Campus (GC) and European Parliament. The GC for Human Rights is a global university network, funded by the EU and based on cooperation between the EIUC and seven regional programmes located in Venice, Sarajevo and Bologna for South-Eastern Europe, in Yerevan for Caucasus, in Pretoria for Africa, in Bangkok and Buenos Aires for Latin America and Caribbean and in Beirut. 100 prominent universities, acting within the EIUC and the GC, represent a unique example of global international cooperation in the field of human rights protection and promotion of democracy.
As the first Croatian MEP, appointed to head the EU observation mission for the elections in Nepal, MEP Zovko will take part in the workshop “Parliamentary Dimension of the Election Observation Missions”. She will address the role of the European Parliament in observation missions and her personal experience in observation missions.
MEP Zovko wil meet members of the academia, university students and university professors of the Master Programme for Democracy and Human Rights (EMA) to discuss the global challenges and new opportunities for the future of education.
“The European Parliament has a very importan role when it comes to elections in the third countries. The Parliament may offer support and know-how to its partners in the implementation of international standards and principles with the uttermost goal to ensure the highest possible level of transparency and legitimacy during the election process.” said Zovko in the debate with the students.
