Zovko: Stronger engagement of EU in the Western Balkans needed

Strasbourg, 15 March 2017 – Discussion on the Resolution of the European Parliament on the 2016 Commission Report on Montenegro was at the agenda of today’s plenary session in Strasbourg.

Members of the European Parliament expressed their support to Montenegro accession to the European Union, but on the other hand pointed out to a necessity of pursuing the reforms. Montenegro has gone the furthest on the accession path to the European Union. 26 negotiating chapters have been opened so far, whereas two have been temporarily closed. The Report welcomes continuous progress of the country in integration, but also warns about the existing problems, such as organised crime, corruption and freedom of media.

Member of the European Parliament, Željana Zovko, said during the discussion: “The European Union must engage more strongly in the Western Balkans in order to encourage aspiration of Montenegro and of other countries on their accession path to the EU. That is the only way to peace and stability in the region, but also in Europe.“

Voting on the Resolution of the European Parliament on the 2016 Commission Report on Montenegro is scheduled for tomorrow, at noon.
