Zovko: No walls may possibly stop the flight from misery and violence

Strasbourg, 17 May 2017 – António Guterres, the UN Secretary General, delivered a speech at the today’s plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The UN Secretary General addressed the topics of refugees’ crisis, situation in Syria and Yemen and the role of the European Union in implementation of the Sustainable Development Programme (Agenda 2030) including 17 sustainable development goals with the uttermost goal to eradicate poverty, fight inequality and injustice and resolve the climate changes issue until the year 2030.

MEP Zovko said on this occasion: “Today’s speech of the UN Secretary General, Mr. Guterres, who was the UN High Representatives for Refugees (UNCHR) for 10 years reminded us that we must relentlessly work on the protection of immigrants and refugees. We must never get tired of supporting the fight against the migration waves, eradication of poverty and protection of humans from wars and violence. The first step would be finding a permanent solution on the very source of the refugees’ crisis and providing additional aid to the refugees’ recipient countries. The European Union has been implementing the sustainable development goals in order to help eradication of poverty, which is the main cause of all migrations.“

“No walls may possibly stop the flight from misery and violence.“ – concluded Zovko.
