The elections to the House of Representatives and the new seven Provincial Assemblies were conducted in Nepal on the 26 November and 7 December. This represents a landmark for the implementation of the Constitution promulgated in 2015 and a step towards completing the establishment of a federal structure.
Though the electoral campaign was marked by a series of violent attacks, the elections nonetheless took place in a largely peaceful atmosphere. As underlined by the EU EOM Preliminary Statement, in spite of a number of shortcomings, political freedoms were well respected and the people of Nepal were able to participate in the democratic process.
The European Union is a close partner of Nepal and is committed to support the country in its democratic development and the conclusion of this transitional period. A European Union Election Observation Mission led by MEP Željana Zovko was deployed to Nepal to observe the electoral process and will remain in the country until the process is completed.
