Zovko: I trust that the Republic of Croatia will meet its strategic goal and join the Schengen area before 2019

 Strasbourg, 24 October 2018

MEP Željana Zovko participated in the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. She delivered a speech in the debate on the Schengen Information System.

Zovko pointed out that even though the Schengen area, conceived as an open-area concept with no borders, was one of the Union’s fundamental values, which encouraged further integration, it showed certain weaknesses during the migrants crisis.

“From the challenges of the migrants crisis in 2015 to the terrorist threats, the Schengen area became primarily a security and political issue. After confidence had been lost in the system, walls were errected again where they had been torn down decades ago.”

Zovko also pointed out to commitment and the progress made by the Republic of Croatia on its path to the Schengen area, where it would resume the responsibility for protection of the European borders.

In its efforts to meet the objective of joining the Schengen area before 2019 and thus resuming responsibility for European external borders with the Western Balkans, the Republic of Croatia has been fulfilling all the tasks in the most responsible manner.”

Zovko further mentioned that the Republic of Croatia was sharing the longest border with the Western Balkans. After implementation of the Schengen Information System and other instruments within the full membership, Croatia will continue protecting Europe from the future threats. Voting on the Schengen Information System will be held in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, 24 October.
