On the day of the inauguration of the new President of the United States, Members of the European Parliament held a debate to discuss the future of the transatlantic cooperation. Željana Zovko took the floor as the EPP shadow standing rapporteur for the relations with the US.
Zovko stated that over the last four years, the US administration has implemented policies that challenged its partners and surprised its foes. She highlighted that with today’s inauguration, the US will enter an unprecedented era as a society divided. According to Zovko, this will also impact the US’ place in the world, and by extension it’s ability to work with Europe on common peace and security issues in our neighbourhood and worldwide. “This cooperation will require extra efforts on our side to extend support, leadership and resources to maintain our important transatlantic partnership.” Zovko stated.
In addition, Zovko welcomed that an American return to multilateralism is high on the new administration’s agenda. “Re-joining the Paris agreement means a big step forward in the global fight against climate change.” Zovko said.
Zovko congratulated the new President and Vice President with their inauguration and wished them and the American people good luck.
