Željana Zovko appointed as rapporteur on behalf of the EPP Group for the report on the United States

Brussels, 3 March 2021

The outcome of the elections in the United States has been perceived across Europe as a sign to commence a new chapter of transatlantic relations. The European Parliament is currently working on a report to take stock of the current dynamics and to anticipate the development of a revitalised partnership.

As shadow standing rapporteur for the relations with the United States, Željana Zovko has been appointed as the shadow rapporteur for the report on behalf of the EPP. She will be the group’s negotiator of the report.

Zovko highlighted the importance of the upcoming recommendations. “We reached a defining moment for the future of the cooperation between the European Union and the United States of America. The report we are working on should be a reference point for the upcoming years. We have to clarify our readiness to engage with our partners across the Atlantic.” Zovko said.

Currently, the world faces an ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of climate change and increasing pressure on fundamental freedoms, values and democracy. According to Zovko, the transatlantic partners can provide answers to these challenges. “We can overcome these hurdles if we work together. We should strengthen the rules-based multilateral system and, review our cooperation on matters such as technology and trade and reaffirm our joint commitment to international security,” she said.
