Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko made a speech today during the mini plenary debate on the EU-US relations in light of the outcome of the US presidential elections.
Zovko stressed she was in Texas last week with colleagues and US Republicans’ hospitality. She added she was glad to see Texas after the election and the patriotism and joy from people there.
America is a democracy with checks and balances and not only Trump was elected, but also the House of Representatives and the Senate. She added the EU has to work with Congressmen and Senators and has to work on consensus, on the issues and not on ideology. The EU and the US have, for example, to work on defence and floods. Zovko also emphasised people voted Trump because they did not receive help when they needed it.
She stated she is looking forward for the EU to come to its senses and to come out of this infantile position expecting somebody else to save it.
“Accept reality, start working with whom we can build bridges and with whom we can find common interests, that is with Trump, with the House of Representatives and the Senate on the same cause and on the same goals that we need in this geopolitical turbulent world”.
Last week Ms Zovko, as member of the Delegation for relations with the US participated in the 89th EU-US interparliamentary meeting of the Transatlantic Legislators’ Dialogue (TLD) in Fort Worth, Texas. Several subjects of common interest were discussed, such as transatlantic security, cooperation in the digital field and in the energy sector, as well as food security.
