Zovko: It is possible to make both Europe and America great – but only if we cooperate

Strasbourg, 21 January 2025

Member of the European Parliament and standing rapporteur for the EPP Group on trade relations with the USA, Željana Zovko, participated today in a plenary debate with Trade Commissioner Šefčovič on the geopolitical and economic implications for transatlantic relations under the new Trump administration.

Zovko congratulated Trump on his desire to put America back on the right path, as American voters elected him for that very reason, while highlighting her personal perception that American cities are under significant pressure due to delinquency caused by the influx of fentanyl through Mexico and unprotected borders, as well as unregulated migration routes.

“As we anticipate President Trump’s next moves in trade, we must simultaneously strengthen our trade partnerships worldwide and enhance our competitiveness. We must enhance our diplomatic channels with the new administration, while advocating for the interests of European producers and better understanding the American business model”, she emphasized.

Reflecting on the European Union’s approach to the United States, Zovko warned that the EU has not fully understood the reality of the United States beyond Washington, and stressed that we must ensure we do not repeat this mistake in our engagement with the new administration.

“It is possible to make both Europe and America great – but only if we cooperate”, concluded Zovko.
