Strasbourg, 22 January 2025
Member of the European Parliament and member of the newly established Committee on Security and Defence, Željana Zovko, participated today in a plenary debate on the topic of the unification of Europe against hostile actors and the strengthening of European security and defence. Zovko emphasized that security forces are working 24 hours a day to protect our citizens, while news from the eastern front continues to cause serious concern.
She pointed out that the adoption of the Strategic Compass in 2022 was a strong response from the Union to the new reality created by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, but that investments in defence must be intensified to strengthen NATO’s European pillar.
She also emphasized that deepening defence cooperation with key allies, such as the United Kingdom, is crucial for the EU to respond to those actors who are trying to undermine the security and well-being of our citizens.
“If not now, when will we realize that significantly strengthening our defence capabilities is absolutely necessary?” concluded Zovko.
