Strasbourg, 7 October 2025
Member of the European Parliament and member of the committee on foreign affairs (AFET) of the European Parliament, Željana Zovko, made a speech today at the plenary session in Strasbourg about the EU’s role in supporting the recent peace efforts for Gaza and a two-state solution.
She recalled that, exactly two years ago, hundreds of innocent Israelis were brutally and tragically killed.
Zovko stressed that this horrific massacre was not a random act but was on the contrary a meticulously planned terrorist strategy aimed at erasing any possibility of coexistence between communities in the region.
She stated that, on 7 October 2025, hundreds of hostages were taken in acts reminiscent of medieval barbarism, shamefully broadcast online with the intent to spread hatred and destroy any hope for peace in the Middle East.
“Those who call for the disappearance of Israel, and those who reject the two-state solution, are the only ones who benefit from such heinous crimes”, she highlighted.
In her address, Zovko welcomed the peace plan presented by President Trump as it constitutes a crucial first step toward building lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
She stressed that the European Union must take an active role, together with international partners, in supporting the success of this plan and in laying the foundation for a viable two-state solution.
“This is our last real opportunity to end this conflict and secure the safe release of the hostages”, she concluded.
