Strasbourg, 21 October 2025
Member of the European Parliament and member of the committee on foreign affairs (AFET) of the European Parliament, Željana Zovko, made a speech at the plenary session in Strasbourg about the recent peace agreement in the Middle East and the role of the EU.
In her address, Zovko underlined that the announcement of an agreement on the Gaza peace plan proposed by President Trump came as a relief. She however insisted that lasting peace requires clear commitment from all sides to address the real obstacles.
Moreover, Zovko emphasized that as long as Hamas remains the sole security authority in Gaza, reconstruction and genuine peace will remain out of reach, as its actions continue to undermine the security of both Israelis and Palestinians.
She also called on the EU to show greater determination to contribute to the success of President Trump’s peace plan with a view to facilitating the two-state solution and peaceful coexistence.
In contributing to lasting peace, Zovko highlighted that coordination with international partners will be key to ensuring that the current opportunity is not wasted.
“We must seize this chance to help bring peace to a region torn apart by decades of conflict and violence”, she concluded.
