MEP Željana Zovko participated in the EPP Congress in Malta
Malta, 30 March 2017 – The European People’s Party adopted at today’s plenary session in Malta the Resolution on the Western Balkans, unambiguously supporting the European perspective of the Western Balkans region and conveying a clear message that the future of the Western Balkans countries is in the European Union.
The adopted Resolution inter alia states that the EU enlargement policy is one of the most successful European policies and the EU simply must not get tired of enlargement, but on the contrary, should further strengthen the integration process and keep the pro-European spirit in the Western Balkans countries alive, providing support to their EU accession aspirations. The countries of the Western Balkans are the closest EU partners in geographical, historical and economic terms. Thus, the European Union shall be fully complete only with these countries in its ranks.
The EPP appealed to all countries-members and all European institutions to focus on the Western Balkans region. On the other hand, they encouraged the Western Balkans countries to pursue the negotiations process, as well as the required reforms and to always count on the strong EPP support in that context. Special attention must be devoted to contribution of the Western Balkans countries to the protection of outer EU borders.
“Peace, stability and prosperity of the Western Balkans countries shall have a long-term positive impact on security and stability of the entire European continent.“ – states the Resolution.
MEP Željana Zovko said that the adopted Resolution conveyed a strong message to the silent majority of the Western Balkans region and encouraged them to pursue institutional and economic reforms in order to finally leave behind the dark tunnel of the past.”
