Brussels/Krakow, 6 October 2018 – MEP Željana Zovko has participated this week in the 18th International Conference on the role of the Chatolic Church in the European integration processes, held in Krakow. The Conference was organised by the European People’s Party (EPP), Pontifical University of John Paul II. Konrad Adenauer Trust in Poland and Robert Schuman Trust from Luxembourg.
MEP Zovko and the former President of the European Commission Jacques Santer took part in the second panel in the debate on the challenges, role and expansion of the Schengen area. MEP Zovko stressed the so-far success of the Republic of Croatia in meeting the conditions for joining the Schengen area soon. She now repeated what she had already stressed in the European Parliament that the Republic of Croatia had been taking the preparations for joining the Schengen area very seriously, especially after the experience of Europe with the migrants crisis in 2015. She also pointed out to Croatian aspirations to take over the responsibility for and to get involved in supervision of the common area as a full member of the European Union.
Many prominent scientists, politicans and European officials gathered at the Conference, including the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, President of the European Council Donald Tusk and former President of the European Commission Jacques Santer, who took part in the debate.
