Zovko to visit the United Nations General Assembly and US Congress

As part of the European Parliament delegation, Željana Zovko will visit the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York and then continue to Washington, D.C. for meetings with US officials next week.

Zovko will travel to New York and Washington, D.C. from 27 to 31 October for meetings with US and UN high-level officials. The stay will include a visit to the 74th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which will provide an opportunity for Zovko to assess how the UN General Assembly has implemented EU priorities and discuss new priorities for the UNGA, as well as possible ways to further uphold multilateralism in the current political and security context. The fight against climate change will also be on the table during the talks.

In New York, Zovko will meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the President of the 74th UN General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande and the Head of the EU delegation to the UN João Vale de Almeida. She will also participate in talks with UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, UN Special Rapporteur for Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions Agnès Callamard, and Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu.

In Washington, Zovko will aim to deepen the political dialogue with the US administration and Congress and exchange views on foreign policy, human rights and security and defence-related issues of transatlantic relevance.

Besides Mr McAllister (EPP, Germany), leading the Parliament’s upcoming delegation, Željana Zovko will be joined by other MEPs from the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), and subcommittees on human rights (DROI) and security and defence (SEDE).
