Member of the European Parliament Zeljana Zovko participates currently as Chief Observer in a visit of three days to Honduras to prepare the European election observation mission for the general elections on 28 November.During her stay, Zovko will meet with the President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, representatives and candidates of political parties Partido Nacional de Honduras, Libertad y Refundación, Partido Liberal de Honduras and other political stakeholders. The mission also entails meetings with representatives of public institutions such as the National Electoral Council and the Tribunal for Electoral Justice and delegations of other international observation missions, such as the Organization of American States.
As Chief Observer, Zovko leads a team of experts and long-term observers that will monitor all aspects of the electoral process. This preparatory visit provides the opportunity for Zovko to meet the team members before they depart to their mission posts across the country. The objective of the mission is to support Honduras to hold elections based on the principle of democracy and in line with the highest standards. After the announcement of the election results, Zovko and her team will publish the mission’s final report with their assessment and recommendations for future elections.
After this first visit to Honduras, Zovko will travel to New York where she will take part in a mission of the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Human Rights to the United Nations headquarters. Afterwards, she will travel with the foreign affairs delegation to Ottawa to discuss EU-Canada relations.
