Together with colleagues of the Committee of Foreign Affairs, Zeljana Zovko participated in a parliamentary mission to the United Nations in New York followed by a mission to Ottawa, Canada. The delegation used this opportunity to highlight the EU’s efforts to promote multilateralism and the importance of close transatlantic relations.
At the UN headquarters, Zovko has met with Volker Türk, Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination, Jayathma Wickramanayake, UN SG envoy for Youth, Rosemary DiCarlo, Under Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Permanent Representatives of European Member States to the UN Security Council and other senior diplomats. Next to the discussions on the global fight against Covid-19 and the recent developments in Afghanistan, Libya and Ethiopia, Zovko discussed the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Members of the European Parliament stressed the necessity to advance on the important UN reforms and shared their views on the implementation of EU priorities in the UN General Assembly.
The mission to Canada included meetings with Senators Peter Boehm and Peter Harder as well as Members of the Canadian Parliament involved in foreign affairs. The delegation discussed the Canadian foreign policies, human rights and security and defence related topics with senior officials and had roundtables on Canada’s perspective on China and the Indo-Pacific and on Arctic issues.
