The Committee for Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament has today adopted its annual reports on common foreign and security policy and on common security and defence policy. In these documents, the Members of the committee take stock of the geopolitical role of the EU and how to deal with international challenges.
Vice Chair of the Committee, Zeljana Zovko states that the report clearly indicate the call for a stronger engagement of the EU’s diplomatic powers in this multipolar world and to defend our economic and political interests and our values such as democracy, respect for human rights and rule of law.
Through her amendments to the texts, Zovko ensured the reports include language on the priority to build strong and reliable alliances, partnerships and multilateral arrangements and that the necessary enhanced European strategic capabilities and structures should be compatible and complementary with NATO.
Zovko also urged for more EU engagement with the countries in the Western Balkans to find solutions for problems impeding further reforms, including the implementation of the 14 key priorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina ensuring the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement. She underlined that the European integration of these partner states is of importance for the stability and security of the continent as a whole.
