ZOVKO: Refugees must not be transferred to the Croatian and EU border, thus shifting the security issue onto the other side

Member of the European Parliament Željana Zovko participated today in the plenary meeting in the debate on the position of migrants on the European Union border in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This topic was placed on the agenda pursuant to an initiative of the populist and liberal parties in the European Parliament with the goal to crudely put the blame on the Republic of Croatia and its Ministry of Internal Affairs for allegedly utterly inhuman and unprofessional treatment of refugees on the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.

Replying to one of the initiators, Zovko pointed out as follows: “You must not use human misery for your personal promotion and promotion of your populist party. I have to underline that the Republic of Croatia respects all international conventions and has recently supported the UN Global Compact on Migration, calling on regulation and control of migrants´ waves.”

Furthermore, Zovko stressed that the refugees´ issue was subject of politization in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that there were sufficient funds available to tackle the problem. “Refugees gather on the EU border. Croatia fully respects all international conventions and is still obliged to protect the security of its borders and of the EU.“ said Zovko.

MEP Zovko father mentioned in her address that the authorities in Sarajevo and the international community must seriously address the problem at its very source.

“Refugees must not be transferred to the Croatian and EU border, thus shifting the security issue onto the other side.” concluded Zovko.

MEP Zovko has been repeatedly pointed out to this issue in last months as a reply to the request of the local community in Bihać, who turned to the Croatian MEPs for help in regard to the construction of refugees´ camps in their municipality.
